Hi everyone. I'm experiencing some instability with my MSI Z490M Gaming Edge Wifi running an i7-10700. I'm using the 8-pin CPU power cable and recently upgraded my PSU from 650W to 850W. Performance feels more erratic, and the CPU frequency drops under load according to CPU-Z. The 12V rail is running at 11.9V, which is low. Temperatures are normal. I've seen similar issues before with the old PSU, but it worked fine then. The screenshots from CPU-Z and HWMonitor during a dip are attached. Should I add the extra 4-pin CPU power?

Yes, connect the extra 4-pin power and check if it causes thermal throttling.

Please note this might be an unoriginal question. Should it run on its own cable from the PSU? I can't use the split line on the already connected one. It shouldn't cause thermal throttling. The CPU is running at a steady 52°C.

It would require a different cable. Your power supply is fully modular, meaning you'd need to add another 4+4 cable (included with the power supply) and divide it.

one cable for the 8-pin connector, another from the power supply for the 4-pin. unclear about the "split line" reference. From what I understand, only PCI cables have two 8-pin connectors, so you shouldn't use them for the CPU. Also, 11.9 volts is within the acceptable range.

The power supply originally had two 4+4 cables for the CPU. After connecting the 8+4 setup, everything is working smoothly. It runs without interruptions even on Prime 95. This doesn’t seem like an issue with the power supply itself. You didn’t need to use the +4 unless you were pushing extreme overclocking. Thanks for your help and the quick responses! I'm not sure about that brand. I haven't heard of them before. The eight-pin design should work for the CPU's power needs. You might want to keep the current supply and try another one.

I would test the software against a multimeter. If the measurement is under 12v on that device, return the PSU. It appears to be an unstable power supply.
