Hey everyone, I was playing CS:GO earlier and accidentally switched tabs while checking forums. When I returned to the game, my FPS dropped from around 144-200 to under 60FPS. This seems to happen occasionally, and usually closing the game resolves it. I tried reinstalling to fix it, but that didn’t help either. It’s confusing—how could switching tabs affect performance so drastically? Also, the game feels almost completely broken now, including the esc key not working at all. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!

Close Chrome now. I don’t know how to do it, just check Task Manager next time. It might be using too many resources.

Unless you have a lot of open tabs or are using Chrome downloads, it won't be sufficient to impact the resources needed for a game like CS:GO. Not criticizing the game. The problem is that Source titles haven't handled alt-tabbing well for years. This isn't new—TF2 has struggled with it too. It's not just Source games; many others, such as Payday 2, also behave poorly after being opened in multiple tabs. It seems these issues are intentional design flaws rather than normal performance. People might claim they don't have problems, but that doesn't matter. Games, especially Source titles, often break when opened with alt-tabs.

It keeps running because the system has a way to restart itself even after a reinstall.

Leaving and restarting the game (as you mentioned) is what you did. Check the integrity of the game cache and run the game once more. Search the web for details about the game and your issue. Often others have encountered the same problem and shared solutions. Try different games, including similar titles, such as CS:Source. Ensure all drivers are current—not just GPU ones. Install updates if necessary and test again. If updates were applied, perform a complete uninstall of GPU drivers using tools like Drive Sweeper, then reinstall the latest versions. When installing, choose "Clean Install." *If recent updates were made or you’ve played the problematic game recently, repeat these steps but install an older working driver version and retest.* Share your findings on reliable forums, providing a detailed hardware list, OS version, and all troubleshooting actions already attempted. Keep in mind, during this process, minimize running unnecessary programs—web browser, monitoring tools, VoIP apps. If removing them helps, re-enable one at a time to confirm the fix. If the issue persists after a few days, consider reinstalling the game, STEAM, or your operating system. (The “10 steps” part was an overstatement.)

I handled most of them once I shared the topic, but I usually stick to other forums for new ones.
