Performance drops even though my equipment meets expectations.
CPU is an i9 9900k running at 3.60GHz, GPU is Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, RAM is Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 at 3600MHz. Motherboard is Asus PRIME Z390-P. I'm using a 144Hz Asus monitor. Currently playing Fortnite and League of Legends. I noticed performance drops in both games, especially in League where frame rates fell from 144fps to around 107fps. After installing 3DMark and running tests, my results indicate the hardware is functioning properly and should perform better than observed. Temperatures are normal, drivers are updated, and I recently installed Windows on a Samsung EVO 970 SSD. Despite all efforts, lag persists in many games. CPU and GPU usage rarely reaches maximum during Task Manager checks. I'm still trying to figure this out.
Consider this a typical scenario that might or might not apply to you. Navigate to Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options, then confirm your power settings are labeled as High performance or Ultimate performance if available. By default, Windows tends to choose Balanced or Power saver, which can limit your system speed. This was my problem when I experienced very few frames after just four stages of Risk of Rain 2, and it appears to impact certain games more than others.
