Performance drops and frame rates decrease on laptops.
Hello. I own an Asus laptop (Asus VivoBook Pro 15 N580VD) since October 2018. Recently, I've experienced consistent and abrupt FPS drops across all games I play. When using Overwatch at high settings and full HD resolution, the GPU temperature jumps suddenly from 60fps to 20-30fps while staying around 79°C. CPU usage hits 99% with temperatures fluctuating between 75-85°C, and battery settings are set to "High performance" with adaptive graphics. I've looked online but haven't found a solution or explanation for the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. SystemSpecs.txt
Inspected vents for debris. Verified fan rotation. It feels like it’s too soon, maybe the manufacturer applied extra paste between the components and the cooling fluid.
CPU frequency stays consistent near 3400MHz across all temperatures, but during voltage fluctuations the GPU speed shifts from about 1500–1600MHz down to 1100–900–800MHz, even when the room stays at 79°C.
Check if the GPU is experiencing any performance limits. Did the CPU reach its maximum speed?
MSI Afterburner confirms the temperature remains at 3.4GHz. There are no thermal throttling warnings for your GPU, and settings like Performance Limit, Thermal, Reliability Voltage, and Utilization have been updated to "Yes."
If your CPU and GPU temperatures are stable, the next frequent cause of throttling is often the VRM, which typically lacks sensors in laptops. You might consider undervolting your CPU and GPU or turning off CPU turbo boost. Some users in the Dell XPS community place thermal pads between the VRM and the chassis base to help dissipate heat (they’re made of metal) or use small finned heat spreaders. You could try similar approaches.
