I recently switched to a Ryzen 9 3900x instead of an i7 8700k. I expected the difference in single clock speeds wouldn’t matter much, but performance has dropped noticeably in CPU-heavy games like Fortnite or CS:GO. Frames often drop to around 200, then fall to about 80 during intense moments, which really affects my gaming experience. Previously with the i7, I maintained around 160 frames, mostly staying between 210 and 240. I’m using 1080p resolution with low settings except for viewing distance, and I’ve tried DOCP and auto settings in the BIOS without any improvement. Should I consider returning the CPU or look for a 10th generation Intel model?

Welcome to the forums! Verify all drivers including your chipset, audio, and LAN for updates. Also review your BIOS for the latest release. Ensure everything is current and download them directly from the motherboard manufacturer site instead of using Windows. A DDU might also help fix the problem.

Do you have a USB drive? It should be used to avoid the factory reset, and you might want to try DDU first.

think about boosting performance by updating drivers. lowering graphics settings can reduce frames, so try increasing them to see if it helps. experiment with the highest possible settings.

Sure, I'll give it a shot with ddu and let you know the result.

My components are current, so I'm hesitant to push overclocking since I'm using the standard cooler and haven't received the AM4 unit yet. However, I'll attempt to reach the maximum limits.

If it doesn't work, keep track of your GPU and CPU thread activity during games. Identify what's restricting your performance when FPS drops. In theory, a 8700k chip performs better than a 3900x, though the improvement isn't double the FPS.
