Hello ! I'm planning to clean install my windows 11 in the next few days to get a fresh start with my computer. I'm also planning to update my BIOS. My system is fairly recent, i'm running a 7800X3D and i ran into some troubles when i updated my bios just after finishing my build (details on the following topics for anyone interested). Since then, a new BIOS has been released, with another AGESA update, and i wanted to update (hopefully i won't run into any other trouble, i'll just downgrade again if it happens i guess). So my question is : is there an optimal order in which things should be done, and if so, what is it ? Should i update my BIOS then clean install windows ? Or should I clean install windows then update the bios ? I'm asking mainly because i read that it's good practice to update your chipset drivers before going into a BIOS update. And since i cannot update my chipset drivers before having installed windows... I'm also just curious to learn haha, so don't hesitate to go into details if there are any. Thank you in advance !

The BIOS refers to the firmware of the hardware, separate from the Windows driver software used by the OS. Usually, you don’t update the BIOS unless there’s an issue with the device it supports.

It makes sense. I plan to upgrade my BIOS since I'm facing minor problems with my system—like odd freezes in certain games even though everything seems brand new, and some crashes when installing Windows. I thought updating could help.

The BIOS update focuses solely on basic hardware management without addressing compatibility concerns.

It could help with memory consistency because similar problems often appear on AM5 systems. Updating your BIOS might be important since power interruptions can damage your graphics card.

Absolutely, that's correct. If the update isn't related to the problem, it's just a waste of time, but we can still do whatever I say.

the issue is i'm not sure if the BIOS updates affect RAM stability when EXPO/XMP is active, and usually the changelogs are brief, as people tend to update their BIOS after facing system issues, especially with AM5's unpredictable behavior regarding RAM. I've noticed it works several times before.

You're facing challenges and might want to reinstall Windows. A BIOS upgrade could be beneficial. If not, you're probably wondering if a BIOS update would have helped. I recommend installing the new BIOS before updating Windows. Check your motherboard's BIOS settings for available updates. Not every release will be listed. If you think XMP might be the issue, turn it off and test. This could point to RAM or memory problems, even if your RAM is approved. The power supply unit or another component might also be the cause.

Yeah fair enough, that's what I was planning to do, Bios update then windows clean install, and then tweaking with EXPO if the issue is still there. I'm dealing with rare (like one every 30-45 minutes) micro-freezes in my games, which is far from the end of the world ofc, but it's the first time i've put that much money into a computer and it's not pleasant to encounter problems like it, idk if it makes sense. Ngl it's a bit discouraging sometimes lol I'd never suspect the PSU to be the culprit for an issue like that, the possible causes seem kinda endless and I strongly suspect i'll just have to accept the issue and live with it. Like i don't have another PSU to try nor the energy to do the swap. Which is fine, there are worst things in life lol, but meh y'know
