You're considering a fresh installation from Z-97 to Z-390. It might make sense to upgrade to an M.2 drive and use your old SSD for extra space. You already have your Windows 7 Pro disk and key, and you completed the free upgrade some time ago. Regarding changes, you likely won't need to deactivate anything unless you're making major system adjustments. The free upgrade should still be available, but you may need to purchase a new 10-inch installation kit and key if you want to proceed with the upgrade. You can also opt for a 7-inch drive at a lower price if you prefer.

On day seven visit microsoft's site, save a program that installs or updates windows. I believe it holds your login details.

Ensure any active Windows installation on your old boot SSD is turned off. Disable the Windows boot manager and set it as a boot choice in the BIOS. You can also obtain Windows 10 for free.

I appreciate your setup plan. Since you won’t add more drives, you can place the remaining ones now and format your SSD afterward.

That's a solid plan. Keep the new M.2 drive attached while removing the SSD before installing Windows 10 from a CD or bootable USB.

You can set up using only Windows 10 and a Windows 7 activation code. New devices won’t work with Windows 7, but if you’ve linked the Windows 7 key to your Microsoft account, you can log in to activate the installation.
