Hi, I'm facing some challenges when picking a CPU for my budget gaming setup with a GTX 950. I was thinking about using a Pentium g3258, but then I saw the AMD FX-4350. Both can be upgraded to better chips, but I prefer spending more on the GPU rather than the CPU. The FX-4350 is because most recent games need four cores, which is a big drawback of the g3248 with just two. I really don't want to upgrade my processor. What do you think?

Both CPUs are quite basic and probably need an upgrade. The upgrade choices for the G3258 are significantly better than those for the 4350. I think their gaming performance would be similar, with the Pentium edge in single-threaded games. I've heard some titles won't run on dual cores, but I can't say for sure. Are you thinking about increasing their speed?

If I were you, I wouldn't go for those options. I'd save $40 and get an i3 6100, or opt for the Pentium and upgrade to an i5 later (though you mentioned you don't want to change your CPU).
I understand the FX has four cores but still struggles today, and even an Athlon X4 860K is better than both.
Game demands are increasing in terms of CPU power... your decision.

Yes, investing a bit more right now for an i3 would likely make a big difference.

Ari3l :
If i were you i wouldn't do any of those. i'd save 40$ and get an i3 6100, or get the pentium and get an i5 later (but you say you don't want to upgrade your cpu)
I know the FX is 4 cores (2 modules) but it still struggles nowadays and even an Athlon X4 860K is recommended more than both.
Games are getting more CPU intensive... your choice.
This is correct, IMO. The i3 should be the bottom for a CPU these days if you plan to do any gaming.

Are you thinking about boosting them?
I intend to overclock, though not much due to the stock cooler. Also, the i3 could make a big difference, even though it only has two cores.

Both are relatively basic CPUs that probably need an upgrade. The upgrade possibilities for a G3258 are significantly better compared to the 4350. I think they’d perform similarly in gaming, with the Pentium having an edge in single-threaded tasks. I’ve heard some titles won’t launch on dual cores, but I can’t say for myself. Are you thinking about boosting their speed?

A regular cooler won’t change much in terms of overclock potential—it might only raise temperatures slightly, which isn’t enough to prevent pushing the CPU to its limits. It does have the standard Intel cooler, which is sufficient for 50-60 TDP.

It has dual cores with hyper threading, which makes it seem like a quad core to Windows and programs. This means games shouldn't refuse to run, even if Pentiums sometimes do that. It's not as powerful as a real quad core like an i5, but Intel's design is currently superior to AMD's, so even a 2 core plus 2 pseudo-core i3 performs better than a "true" quad core FX CPU.

It's a dual core with hyper threading, which makes it function similarly to a quad core. This should not cause problems with games running, even if some Pentiums have issues. It's not as powerful as a real quad core like the i5, but Intel's design is currently superior to AMD's.

I was planning a $400 gaming PC build and couldn't budget for it, so what alternatives would you suggest?
