Do you have a reference to the PCIe card you purchased? I recall researching PCIe in several M.2 adapters recently and noticed a need for PCIe bifurcation, which is typically a motherboard capability.

Based on what I observe, the second x16 port of the Asrock H170Pro4S is only connected for x4. A split would only happen if the adapter transforms x16 into four x4 lines and lacks its own controller—though the wiring here is strictly x4. Which device should you use? It might work with a different adapter. Can it support several SSDs? Given the x4 PCIe interface, you’d probably need to insert the SSD into the M.2 slot linked to the x4 connection on the motherboard.
