i just discovered something cool today. i was annoyed that gigabyte didn’t consider pcie design. my graphics card hides a tiny pcie slot. thinking i’d search for something fun, i typed “can you fit a small pcie in a big pcie slot?” and got a yes. the pins from a x1 match those of an x16 slot, so it works. that’s strange because i’m generally tech-savvy—i can find info easily by asking questions. yet this simple fact was completely unknown to me. that’s how you learn something new every day.

Impressive, right? A x4 card fits perfectly into an x1 slot.

It's similar to using a toaster that has four slots but only inserts one slice of bread. It will still work perfectly.

Absolutely, that's the point—it's not widely known. At least, it isn't common enough. Until you wonder if it's even feasible. That video is from 2012. Wow, how much progress has happened? But seriously, it's really simple.

Previously, it was widely understood that PCs came with PCI-E ports that were left open for easy installation. Today it serves little purpose for regular users, which is why few people are aware of it anymore.

It's understandable, but most people here are aware that a device smaller than an X16 can fit into an X16 port.
