Has anyone experimented with this PCIE to M.2 adapter? (Ugreen) Any suggestions on using one of my boards, which only has a single M.2 slot, to upgrade my storage? I’m not very experienced with these approaches. My board is an MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max, and some reviews mention it doesn’t support the board because the PCIE is x1 instead of x4. Others suggest you might need a bootloader and warn that it can get hot easily—maybe a heat sink would help.
The connectors are typically four-channel, meaning they need a port that physically accommodates four channels or more and can deliver four simultaneously. Certain SSDs function with just one channel (consult the datasheet), though this isn't universal. For instance, some motherboards feature large slots that only support a single channel, which may prevent adapter use. Adapters with multiple M.2 bays often require splitting the lanes, a setup rarely possible on most desktop boards—particularly when a graphics card is present. Some older boards lack compatibility for booting from an M.2 drive in a PCI-E slot, but newer models usually do. If not, the system might still identify the drive as storage within an existing Windows setup, depending on the specific hardware.
Do you possess a graphics card? Based on your manual, you have a choice of a 4-lane adapter. This corresponds to the second full-length PCI-E port, designed for four lanes. There aren't enough PCI-E lanes for a two-slot adapter.
Note: The manual specifies that all PCI-E slots except the first and sixth must remain empty so the second full-length slot can accommodate four lanes; otherwise it only supports one lane.
