PCIe lanes remain locked at one lane in a 16-pin slot
Hello community, I recently added a new graphics card to my system (5070) and downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia. After restarting everything, the card appears in PCIe 1x 3.0 speed. Previously, I had a 2070 Super in the same slot, running at 3.0 x16. I’m puzzled as to why the motherboard isn’t auto-detecting x16. I checked the BIOS and tried forcing it, but only got 3.0 x8 across both PCIe lanes. I can also use 3.0 x8, 3.0 x8 across, or 3.0 x4. I updated the BIOS to the latest version (F11 i9 10900kf Gigabyte Aorus Master Z590 32GB Corsair Dominator DDR4 2100-3200 XMP 800W PSU), and the card is working fine in 3.0 x16 mode. However, when I reboot without saving changes in BIOS, it reverts back to 1x 3.0. I’ve tried reseating the card or reinstalling the BIOS from a USB drive, but it always comes back to 1x. I’d rather avoid going into the BIOS and risk losing data. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Are there more symptoms than just the single occurrence? The GPU might save power by running at a lower setting, switching to 16x when rendering begins. If games still function properly and maintain around 5070 FPS with your CPU, it could simply be power optimization without any issues.
If it's powering up in 1X only, pull the card back out and make sure that you plugged it into the x16 slot fully. To me this seems like a connection issue, either not fully seated in the slot, or insufficient power, so the card is just behaving as though it has a bad connection. Failing that, go into the BIOS and just force it to operate at Gen 3 instead of Auto. Maybe the GPU has the wrong firmware on it.
It's odd that flashing the BIOS resets everything and shows 3.0 x 16, yet entering BIOS briefly lets you see 3.0 x1 before switching to Windows. Only by erasing the CMOS or updating the BIOS can you access higher modes like 3.0 x8.
Here’s a clearer version:
The BIOS flashing process for F7 doesn’t seem to restore settings properly. Clearing CMOS didn’t help much, and entering BIOS still forces it back to 1x 3.0. Switching to PCIE Gen 3 from Auto didn’t fix the issue either. I’m trying to use 16x but can’t get there. I’m considering removing or reinstalling the Mobo drivers.
It confirms the information in BIOS near the X16 slot details. The render test doesn’t alter it. I’m beginning to suspect a possible CPU damage, perhaps from voltage or power issues that affected the silicone. What I’m certain about is that updating the BIOS to version F7 will reset everything back to defaults and clear CMOS.
