PCIE lane operates at x8 rather than x16
Hey everyone, had a problem when I powered on my PC this evening. I received a notice that the PCIe slot where my graphics card is connected is now operating at Gen 3 instead of Gen 4. I checked my BIOS and managed to revert it back to Gen 4. I’m not sure what caused the switch or why it happened. After restarting, I opened up GPU-Z to verify the change and confirmed it was successful. Now everything is back to Gen 4. The issue I’m facing is that the slot is running at x8 instead of x16. I noticed my built-in graphics are still active and working at x16. I went back into the BIOS and turned off the onboard graphics, hoping that would fix it, but the GPU keeps running at x8. Any advice would be appreciated. Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F CPU: 7800X3D GPU: 7900XT Red Devil I also have a 500GB Crucial P5 Plus in the top NVMe slot acting as a boot drive, and a P3 in the second NVMe slot for storage.
Does the performance remain consistent under load? Pressing the question mark initiates a stress test that boosts your GPU's clock speeds into 3D Mode and increases PCIe lanes to 16.
It remains stable at x8. I'm unsure why it doesn't work in x16. I only assembled the system a couple of weeks ago. It could have been operating with this setup from the start. I began investigating after receiving a warning that my PCIe lane switched to Gen 3 speeds.
Only CPU, RAM, two NVMe storage units, and the graphics card are present.
Do you have the most recent UEFI from 16 days prior? If not, begin by updating it first. Are you connected to a GPU riser cable? That seems likely to be the issue—inspect the connections and consider removing or replacing it if the problem persists. Have you attempted to re-seat the GPU?
Yeah updated last night, no difference. Nope no riser cable in use. I have reseat the gpu and still x8. The only thing I can think of now is to remove the second m. 2 and see if that's the culprit. It shouldn't be, but worth a shot. The last thing I'd like to have to do is get a new motherboard
I’ve looked into this problem and decided to return the board. Several users faced the same issue without a fix. A new one is arriving next week, which hopefully solves it. I understand the performance impact isn’t huge, but I invested in this and could be affected significantly over time.
