There’s no built-in way to force a PCIe 4 NVMe connection into a PCIe 3 slot, but you can use an external adapter to bypass the speed limits. This would let you access the higher speeds of PCIe 4 while keeping your existing setup.

If your PC doesn’t support PCIe Gen 4, you won’t be able to run it at that speed regardless of the expansion card. However, PCIe remains backward and forward compatible, meaning a Gen 4 M.2 can work on Gen 3 PCIe with only Gen 3 speeds.

PCIe Gen 3 won't affect the speed of a 980 PRO.
