Checked out all USB ports on my desktop. Consider using a PCI-E USB card for the X-56 and VR headset. I'm worried about running out of PCI-E lanes for more cards without affecting performance. I currently have two add-in cards and three hard drives consuming PCI-E bandwidth. I believe Zen 3 supports only 24 lanes, so I might be at capacity. System load is high with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, MSI B550, and other components.

You can connect an external USB hub to low-bandwidth gadgets like mice, keyboards, webcams, and peripherals. A good option on Amazon should work well.

For heavy USB 3.0 usage you likely lack sufficient chipset capacity. However, if you only require a few extra ports occasionally, USB hubs or legacy PCIe adapters are suitable options.

The chipset also includes a built-in USB controller, with several USB ports on the IO shield connected directly to the CPU. Other ports originate from the USB controller within the chipset.

Great approach. I'll try connecting via one of the on-board USB ports on the motherboard. Having two open headers and only one PCI-E slot available makes it practical, especially since I appreciate having add-in cards installed.
