PC will stop accepting thumb drives.
My PC, which normally functions perfectly, now fails to recognize my USB thumb drives. It still works with my external hard drive and phone. I've tested various drives on different ports without success. The PC emits a beep when connected, but the device isn't listed in the file manager. I attempted to create a bootable thumb drive and followed the instructions, but none have worked since then. I only did that for one of them.
What are the specifications for the system, especially the motherboard details? There seems to be a USB driver problem. Does the thumb drive show up in "My Computer"? If yes, is it possible to left-click on it and format it from there?
It's a Dell XPS 8900. System details keep spinning without results. I received an error saying I can't access the Windows Instrumentation Software, likely because it's a Dell proprietary motherboard. Everything else seems to work fine—just standard parts with no extra video features. 16G memory is installed, and the thumb drives aren't showing up in My Computer, but the external hard drive and phone do appear when connected.
Visit the Dell support page for the XPS 8900 desktop to verify if any updates or drivers are needed. You might also find diagnostic tools available there.
Occasionally you can navigate to the device manager, select your USB Tree, and begin from the bottom by uninstalling the device, moving upward. When prompted about deleting the driver, select NO. Proceed up the tree until you lose your mouse and keyboard. Don't stress—just perform a hard reboot. A new set of USB drivers will install upon restarting. Ensure only the mouse and keyboard are connected during the reboot. Wait for completion before retrying the USB thumb drive "s" and your external hard drives will require reinstalling their drivers when plugged in.
Reviewed BIOS and drivers, everything is fine.
Adhered to your directions, all functionality works except USBs aren't recognizing the thumb drives (three of them, multiple ports). USBs emit a beep when connected to either front port but don't appear in File Manager, though the red LED on the drive doesn't illuminate. When plugged into the USB in the back, the red LED lights up but no beeping occurs, and it still doesn't show up in File Manager.
Review the section on disk management to verify their presence.
Some years ago, I bought a pack of five SanDisk USB drives in various bright colors. Of those, all but one only worked once before, and the last one has been functioning well since then. I kept the others together with a twist tie to remind myself not to buy again. I wondered if the different models you tried might be different makes, brands, or sizes?
On the setup being discussed, is it consistently been a personal computer or was it a refurbished office machine?
It seems similar to a corporate USB restriction policy designed to block malicious software or other harmful actions.
