I was searching for a headset to enjoy Elite: Dangerous. Because it doesn’t need VR controllers, the Vive wouldn’t be required (though I recognize it’s top for general VR gaming). I’ve been told the Oculus Rift could be a solid choice.

They’re both solid choices. I’d pick the one that fits your needs best. @Sakkura is great for explaining the Rift.

I own a Vive and I really like it. I haven’t tried the Rift yet, but I’ve heard it’s more comfortable since it’s lighter. If you’re planning to use VR just while sitting, I’d recommend the Rift because you won’t need controllers and it’ll be more affordable. However, if you want a full VR experience, hand controllers are essential. You can also attach them to the Rift later, but that adds extra cost since you’ll need three sensors for accurate room tracking.

Explore Frontier's community boards. I own a Vive, and during testing I encountered some issues, while the Rift seemed unaffected. I'm not familiar with whether this has been fixed since I'm mostly idle in ED. The Rift was thought to be superior for that title. With the latest touch controllers, the Rift should align well with the Vive on room scale soon.

The main goal was to try VR in Elite: Dangerous using a throttle and joystick setup—no controller needed at all. I doubt VR controllers are available in the game, so the Oculus should work just fine. I wasn’t planning to play any other VR titles that depend on controllers.

You're absolutely right about focusing on the Rift in Elite Dangerous. If you're interested in room-scale VR experiences, the Vive would be the superior option.

I've also heard similar ideas before. Elite seems to focus more on the Rift, doesn't it?

For seated options head to Rift. For larger spaces try Rift, Touch or Vive.

The sensation I'm experiencing is clear. I'm leaning toward taking the Rift.
