I handle video editing professionally and have faced this desktop issue recently. After installing the Ryzen 9 5900X in December 2022, I’ve encountered a recurring problem where certain applications cause my system to shut down completely and spin up all fans at full speed. It won’t restart unless I manually disconnect the power supply and reboot the whole machine. This has happened while using Adobe Premiere, the final level in Hitman 3, and after about 20 minutes of playing Red Dead Redemption 2. The only consistent trigger seems to be the final level in Hitman 3. Other programs don’t cause this consistently.
I’ve tried various diagnostics: single-core and multi-core Cinebench tests showed no crashes. I swapped out my PSU with a new RM850x, but the issue persists during the final Hitman 3 level. I reordered CPU sticks, replaced RAM, and even ran the game with one stick at a time to check for memory issues. Still, it crashes at the same point. I’ve updated the BIOS and graphics drivers, cleaned the case thoroughly, and dusted everything. Despite these efforts, the problem remains.
My CPU runs at 3.70 GHz, GPU is RTX 2080 Super, and I’m keeping an eye on temperatures—consistently between 80-85°C during heavy workloads, versus 44-54°C when idle. I suspect overheating might be the culprit, but other games I use regularly cause more stress than this. The crash logs don’t show any DMP entries for this type of failure.
I’m desperate to get this fixed so I can work confidently again. Could you help identify what’s wrong?
Usually I'd support your view, but I replaced the GPUs after the CPU update. The CPU switch happened in December, while the GPU changes were about a month prior. Both GPUs still needed re-setting twice.
