Last night my computer started on its own during the night, just once. I’m not sure, but it seems like the power to the house was cut off briefly before it shut down. My system: i5 3470, 16GB DDR3 RAM, ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 board, Corsair CX power supply, Radeon R7 360p card.

When the electricity went out, many BIOS options include a "restore to last known state" feature. This means if the computer was powered on during the outage, it should automatically restart once power is back on.

In my situation, did the PC shut down when the power failed?

Review wake-up configurations for external devices within driver management. Also examine sleep and activation timers under power settings. You can disable many of<|pad|>'s options if you don’t use sleep mode or prefer to restart the PC without pressing the power button. Disabling hybrid sleep in power settings is also possible.

I just reinstalled Windows 10. The issue arose prior to the setup, making it impossible to identify the system settings at the time the computer booted up automatically.

Yes, it's common for power to reset and the PC to restart automatically after an outage.

Review your BIOS configuration. The majority of BIOS systems include an option to adjust these behaviors once the power is cut off: off, on, or previous state. If your BIOS is configured to "on," the computer will automatically power up whenever it receives energy—whether you flip a switch or experience an outage. I follow this approach because I use a physical switch to shut down my PC, ensuring it starts automatically without manual intervention. Using a switch also prevents unexpected activations or remote access to your system.

If the PC was already powered off before the outage, the BIOS functionality should still operate normally.

This action would exactly replicate what happens when the AC is restored. I powered down my PC and then turned off the power switch. When I later turned it back on, it would turn on as expected. This mirrors the scenario you described if a power outage occurred. However, in your situation, you didn’t want it to activate when the AC came back on.

I powered off the PC using Windows, yet the power button wasn't activated.
