PC shuts down unexpectedly, applications stop working Games and browser windows freeze or close abruptly
I recently assembled a new desktop with these components: processor – Intel i5 13400F, graphics – MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 4070, RAM – 12GB, motherboard – ASUS PRIME B760M-A AX D4 (BIOS 0810 then 1002), storage – Kingston NV2 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe, memory – G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600, power supply – Cooler Master MWE Gold 850 V2 Full Modular, 850W, 80+ Gold Efficiency, CPU cooler – Vetroo V5 black case, operating system – Fractal Design Pop Air Black.
I installed the PC myself, updated the BIOS, and ran Windows. It functioned smoothly for roughly eight hours without issues after installation. When it crashed, I had three monitors set up—one portrait, two landscape—and was running Overwatch 2 in idle mode. Firefox had about six YouTube tabs open while watching one video. Chrome handled emails, Discord, Steam, and Razer Synapse alongside some background apps like FanControl and Epic Games.
During the crash, I was using BIOS version 0810 because the latest update advised updating ME firmware before installing. I couldn’t locate that step. My Nvidia driver was up to date for the 4070. Most monitors went dark initially, then some displayed inverted colors briefly before restarting on their own—this also occurred during League of Legends. I disabled XMP settings prior to the incident since it appeared on the previous restart.
I connected to the same monitors, Discord, YouTube in Firefox, and various browser tabs. The crash repeated: monitors partially went black, colors inverted briefly, then PC rebooted. I reset RAM, checked PSU connections, and upgraded BIOS to version 1002. After that, Overwatch 2 crashed again—only freezing for 10–15 seconds. I could press alt + tab to view other open windows in a sequence (if configured), but the game stayed front-and-center after switching tabs.
It displayed a crash file during the failure. I reopened Firefox and tabs inconsistently crashed afterward. I removed Riot Games and Valorant, ran a memory diagnostic—no issues found. The system seems stable at idle right now.
