Hi everyone,

I'm setting up a PC for a friend who works as a freelancer and wants to switch from his current laptop. He's handling modeling projects for restaurants, beach clubs, and villas—both interiors and exteriors, with a preference for not too many trees (Lumion’s advice). He needs it to run at 1440p resolution.

Here’s what I’ve gathered so far (ignoring prices, as I’m based in Indonesia):

CPU:
Intel Core i5-14600K 3.5 GHz, 14-core processor
($214.99 @ Newegg)

CPU Cooler:
Deepcool AK620, 68.99 CFM
(Motherboard not specified)

Memory:
G.Skill Flare X5, 64 GB (2 x 32 GB), DDR5-5600 CL36
($179.99 @ Amazon)

Storage:
ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70, 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 NVME SSD
($149.99 @ Best Buy)

Video Card:
Zotac GAMING AMP Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, 16 GB
($549.95 @ Amazon)

Power Supply:
Fractal Design Ion Gold, 750 W, 80+ Gold certified, fully modular ATX
($154.85 @ Amazon)

Case Fan:
ARCTIC F12, 53 CFM, 120 mm
($9.63 @ Amazon) – repeated for both fans

Monitor:
Acer XV272U, 27.0", 2560 x 1440, 144 Hz
($343.99 @ Amazon)

Total cost: $1753.01
Includes shipping, taxes, and any available discounts

I didn’t use Lumion personally; I created this list based on the recommended specs from Lumion’s site for 1080p work and estimated the extra needed for 1440p.

The main concerns are:
- Is a 16GB VRAM GPU really necessary, or could a standard 4060/4060Ti with 8GB suffice?
- Could I opt for a smaller cooler since Lumion is more GPU-heavy?
- Given the lower CPU load, maybe downgrading the CPU would help?
- And for now, reducing storage to 1TB seems reasonable.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

P.S.: Ideally, I’d stick with DDR5 technology.

Moving work computer from laptop to desktop – is this correct?
Lumion:
You’ve noticed that many software makers list hardware and software needs in terms like “minimum,” “recommended,” or “best.”
You’re not aiming for the bare minimum; you want the highest quality within your budget.
What’s your budget?

Advice:
Use the parts list as a reference to locate and review all relevant documentation—User Guides, Quick Starts, product forums, FAQs, etc.
Be careful with installation requirements and configurations; confirm full compatibility.
Read every detail, note any warnings, and check for updates online.
Approach the build process step by step, as if you had all components ready now.
Will everything fit and function properly? Details are important.

You're right, shifting from a laptop to a desktop.
Having experience building computers—especially with the latest DDR5 systems—means I've checked the recommended specs and ensured compatibility.
Since I don't have a specific reference point, it's hard to decide where to prioritize the budget.

We are imagining a scenario without any budget constraints.
Create a build that satisfies the necessary or preferred specifications. Will there be 3D moving animations displaying interiors and/or exteriors? Or perhaps only basic floor plans and facades (with limited trees).

If it exceeds the budget, find ways to cut costs or raise funds.
There will be compromises involved.
Where can expenses be minimized—either in big jumps or smaller increments? Or a mix of both?
Is there an actual need for 64 GB of RAM?
Is it guaranteed that additional fans are essential?

Yes, he prefers working at 1440 but is that truly required?
In reality, this might just be a future-proofing step or a functional must-have.
You’re already considering these aspects.
Also consider the perspective of the end user: will achieving a certain frame rate really stand out compared to another?
Or identify which specifications are important and measurable, and focus on those.
Compare the laptop’s features with the proposed build requirements.
You might discover that the extra power from a desktop isn’t crucial, opening up opportunities to reduce costs.
This process demands careful thought and involves risks that must be acknowledged, understood, and decided upon.

Here are some useful insights. Our workstations for Lumion have been tested and fine-tuned to ensure top performance and dependability. Check out our hardware suggestions. www.pugetsystems.com
Further details can be found in the link provided, where it mentions that a 6800xt video card could be purchased for under $500. https://lumion.com/product/system-requirements
