PC power-off by itself, Spark and Pop from the GPU zone with odor then restarted without issues
Hello All,
My computer shut down by itself while I was playing games. I restarted right away but there was a spark and it popped from the GPU area with an odor. After that, I checked the GPU cable and PSU cable—none of them had any problems. I restarted again and everything is working fine.
Should I be concerned or are there other steps I can take?
CPU: AMD 5800x3d
GPU: AMD 6750xt
MB: ASUS rog crosshair viii formula
PSU: CORSAIR rx850m
Average Temperature while Gaming: 90+ °C
This is what we refer to as a catastrophic failure. It’s essentially the most severe outcome possible. Only when it actually catches fire is it truly worse.
CPU and GPU temperatures? In any case, they’re dangerously high, particularly for the GPU.
That’s a big concern because it depends on what caused the issue—you’ll need to replace either the GPU or the motherboard. I recommend taking the entire PC apart and checking everything. When you find the damaged part, replace it.
If nothing seems to have happened, it’s likely that another component will catch fire. Then there’s no way to save the PC; you’ll have to figure out what to do next.

I would listen to Aeacus, This is almost a repeat of another member about a month ago. Last I remember he needed a new system. Take that warning shot AKA that pop as a lucky warning.
So far your not posting . I don't get it I played my games yesterday. Shut down last night and now PC dead. So far you dodged that bullet.
At 80+C, you'll start seeing GPU thermal throttle. At 90+C, you're risking GPU burning up. GPU protections should've kicked in and kill the power to whole system, to safeguard the hardware from overheating but for some reason, it didn't do so. Instead, you cooked the GPU to catastrophic failure.
