So, i noticed now a few times this has happened, i can be doing things normally on my PC, gaming, rendering and browsing the web all is fine and good for hours on end, but as soon as i let my PC idle for a while like maybe i get up and get some food or something when i come back to my PC its extremely laggy. its as if i were to underclock my cpu to like 1ghz or if i was using only one core. its really annoying and i'm forced to reboot to get the lag to stop.. If there's anything i could do to fix this i'll try anything. i checked to ensure my cpu wasn't actually just dropping the frequency and it wasn't. it sits at 4.9 - 5.3 ghz My specs: Windows 11 pro build 22621 i9-11900k 32gb hyperx fury (i forget the speed of it) 500gb samsung 960 EVO nvme RTX 3060 12gb

Begin by checking your power plan settings. Your configuration may not support one of the idle options available. Additionally, consider updating your motherboard's BIOS to the latest release.

The power plan should remain high performance. Adjust the settings to prevent the drives from shutting down or entering sleep/hibernation. Your latest BIOS is already up to date.

I favor strong performance but keep individual settings as you mentioned—avoid sleep or hibernation unless necessary. Using the latest BIOS can reduce uncertainty. How does your Task Manager appear during this, and what are the CPU/GPU usage stats?

I assumed the power plan was set this way because I've used it consistently over the years. The CPU stays around 10-12%, the GPU only uses a little more than 5% unless I'm playing games, then it jumps to about 25-40% (usually drops below that during gaming but spikes). The GPU remains at 99-100% even when not running anything heavy, like Firefox or launching the start menu.

Have you observed any unusual activities? I can suggest several tools for checking malware or viruses. To remove software issues, I’d recommend clearing the drive and starting a fresh installation of Windows. Have you verified all your connections and cables inside the computer case to ensure they’re securely attached?

I haven’t downloaded anything yet; I only scan occasionally and haven’t found anything suspicious. The installation is brand new—Windows was set up on this drive about a week or two ago after I received it. Everything has been reconfigured and reconnected, and I don’t see any issues or missing components.

The installation process around a week or two ago showed the same problem, or you noticed it only after some time passed.

The only way to fix this seems to be restarting Windows completely and checking if the problem persists. You mentioned you realized the issue later, so you might have caught it sooner if it had been happening consistently. If reinstalling with a fresh setup doesn’t resolve it, it likely points to a hardware fault. The next step is narrowing down the possible cause by testing different components.
