I've faced this problem before, but didn't pay much attention. Now and then I need a USB Type-C connection, so I'm curious what others think. My motherboard is an Asus ROG B450-F with a USB Type-C port on the back. The case lacks a USB Type-C on the front. About two years ago I realized my phone would connect but wouldn't charge properly—amperage was too low, maybe only 1% or less. It might output around 100mA at best. I've heard Asus offers a software called Asus AI Charger, but it's no longer available. I haven't tried it to check if it helps. Recently, using USB Type-C has caused issues too. When connecting my phone, I had to plug it in directly; otherwise, the PC would shut down or Windows would think it was turned off. This seems specific to my USB Type-C port. How did it happen and how can I fix it? I assume my motherboard is installed correctly. Any suggestions for resolving this charging problem? My quick solution right now is using a standard USB-A to USB Type-C cable.
I’m not familiar with MOBOs, but if I had to guess, it’s likely a problem when the USB port was soldered onto the board causing a short circuit. It’s unlikely if it’s covered under warranty, but you could attempt a return if you have the original packaging and cover. If you’re handy with a soldering iron, fixing it might be possible, though I’m not sure.
If the insertion wasn't done correctly and excessive force was used, the port might get damaged. The main reason for poor grounding could be an incorrect mount on the I/O shield, though the Strix B450-F includes a built-in one, so that's unlikely. Alternatively, the motherboard may have been shipped with a grounding issue unrelated to your actions.
USB type A delivers approximately 5V 1A, while your USB-C should offer around 5V 1.5A. It seems your USB-C port likely meets that requirement. You might want to check the BIOS settings or ensure it’s installed in the peripherals manager. Updated March 3, 2024 by leclod
AFAIK USB-C doesn't exceed USB-A current unless it offers power delivery. It's unlikely some manufacturers will deviate from the standard and let more flow, but I wouldn't count on it. It's usually not wise to use your PC to charge devices needing higher power, since a malfunction could damage expensive equipment instead of a simple charger.
It doesn't matter what kind of current the person prefers, they only get so much. A recipient isn't damaged by slower power supply, in fact, they benefit from it. I don't understand your argument. It looks like you're suggesting avoid charging from your motherboard. I prefer to do it. I power my keyboard, mouse, power bank, camera, and phone with it. (Of course the short circuit concern is a worry.) I'd test the Asus AI Charger—it might give some guidance. Edited March 3, 2024 by leclod
