I recently changed my CPU from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 9 5900x, since I mainly use my computer for music production and larger projects are getting quite CPU-heavy. The 5900x works well for simple tasks, but it crashes during intense work. When this happens, the screen turns black while the fans and AIO radiator keep running, and the CPU indicator on my motherboard turns red—according to the manual, that means the CPU isn’t detected or is failing. The computer then shuts down completely, and the power button doesn’t respond. I can only shut it off through the power supply unit. I’m not sure what’s causing this problem. I upgraded my PSU to an 850W, but the issue continues. My motherboard is a bit old and might need an upgrade, though I’m not certain. I’m running the latest BIOS and drivers for everything, and I’m using a Corsair iCue Link H100i LCD AIO which maintains CPU temperatures around 60-70°C under load. It’s a bit frustrating because I don’t have any spare parts to fix it properly, so I was hoping someone could help or give advice. Thanks.
The VRM on that motherboard is likely not adequate for that CPU, especially considering the heat it generates. The AIO doesn't direct downflow air toward the motherboard and VRM area. Without more details about your cooling system and fans, it would probably be wise to temporarily place a fan, maybe just opening the side of the case and directing a "house fan" at that part of the board to check for stability.

Interesting. My situation is currently pretty straightforward since all panels are off; I'm just trying to understand what's going on with my setup. I have three SP120 Elites at the front, an AF120 Elite at the back, and an aio radiator with two QX120 units. I recorded a HWI log before the crash, but according to someone I shared it with, there wasn't a clear sign of the problem—possibly the PSU was the culprit, though that didn't turn out to be the case.
I'm using the newest BIOS version 7B85v1H4 (beta). The PSU is brand new, and I upgraded from an old Corsair 650W because I thought the CPU might not get enough power.
Thanks for sharing the Reddit thread—I saw many responses suggesting disabling PBO, but I still want to keep future overclocking in mind, so a fresh motherboard could be ideal.
The motherboard should handle the 5900x with the 850W PSU, so power issues seem unlikely. This issue might relate to temperature or hardware problems. Check the ICUE program for individual CPU thread temperatures around the crash time—start there. Also, confirm if you reused your AIO and applied the right thermal paste.
I can't view temperatures for individual threads in iCUE, though the CPU reached 62 degrees during a recent crash after launching a tough program. For the 5900x and AIO, they are brand new. I purchased them together because I wanted something superior to my old stock wraith stealth cooler. I left the factory-applied thermal paste on the AIO, but I don’t think it contributed to this problem.
Not exposed to open air, but a cool air stream is directed over the VRM and heatsinks.
Apologies. I attempted to place a house fan next to the open case, directing air straight onto the CPU. Even though the system still crashed, it seemed to last a bit longer than expected. Could you suggest that perhaps the VRM isn't sufficient for this CPU?
