I wasn't sure how it functioned, so I asked for your advice. I just bought Sims 4 in CD format and wanted to know if I needed to keep inserting the CD each time I played or if it was a download that installed automatically. Thanks!

After installation or download, it remains there. No further disk requirement afterward.

Usually, when games are installed from CDs, you need the disc inside to run them. However, if you don’t use any other CDs, it should work fine and you can keep it stored there.

If the game requires a CD, duplicate it onto your computer and set up a virtual CD drive. -- Poweriso

You can obtain the ISO file from a library or friend's place and build a virtual version on your computer if you don't have a CD/DVD drive.
