I've spent my whole life playing on consoles with a controller in my hand. This month I'm switching to PC for my first time and I'm trying to understand how challenging it can be at first. I'm curious if using a keyboard and mouse gives me an edge compared to traditional controllers. My button set is already optimized for most games, so I don’t need to switch joysticks. Could I adapt by getting an adapter and keep using the controller? I’m completely new to this and just want to learn from others.

I think your controller should function with the PC, but you might need the wireless adapter or a USB cable connected to the computer. Keep in mind that certain games could have compatibility issues. Most should work fine. Regarding the variation, I believe there’s a distinction between KB+M and the controller itself—it won’t be too complicated. You’ll likely adjust to it within a week. By the way, why are you getting a PC?

The majority of games will now work with your controller, or at least newer versions will. Just connect it to a USB port and let Windows handle the drivers—very smooth setup. It might take a week to get comfortable with the keyboard layout, but once you're set, you can easily switch layouts for any game you like. This should make things much simpler.

If you are playing multiplayer competitive you will get crushed by other people with mouse and kb, because they can be more precise more quickly. If you try a little bit of both, thats fine. Only main controller on single-player games.

keyboard and mouse offer greater precision and faster response than controllers in most cases. they also provide extensive personalization options such as mapping buttons and creating macros. you can still operate your controller. controllers are better suited for tasks like driving, flying, or controlling machinery because they allow fine adjustments in speed and direction, which first-person perspectives don't always capture well. however, a controller cannot match the performance of a steering wheel with pedals or a joystick with pedals.

I chose PC as my main platform in late 2014. I still liked using controllers when possible. The reason I switched to KB+M was after purchasing the Mass Effect trilogy on Origins—there was no controller support. I spent a while searching online for a controller mod before giving up and learning to use KB+M, which became my only option for that series. By 2016, I mostly relied on KB+M. My best friend tends to be a bit frustrated with this setup. I introduced him to PC gaming in early 2015, and now he spends more time playing his PC than his PS4, often taking months between sessions. Still, whenever he buys an older game without controller support, he ends up asking for a refund from Valve.

Maybe the system reacts differently depending on how you approach it. Even with a controller, your performance stays strong and sometimes surpasses others who rely on M+KB.

You'd like greater freedom in gaming, especially on consoles. You also want to stream on Twitch and enjoy H1Z1 content.
