Hi everyone, I'm just starting out with PC gaming. My son handles the setup, but I'm still learning everything. He's upgraded his computer parts, yet he keeps running into issues with crashes during games like Fortnite, Fortnite regularly, Forza H4, Apex Legends, and even Minecraft. Even the original version works just fine.

Here’s a quick rundown of my setup:

Original PC
i7 -870
Gigabyte motherboard (model not remembered)
16GB HyperX Blue 1600MHz DDR3
GTX 970
600W power supply – brand unknown
2x 1TB HDDs
Windows 10 Pro

Monitors
3x 22" 1080p displays

Upgrades made
Ryzen 7 3700X
Asus Crosshair vi Hero motherboard with latest BIOS
16GB HyperX Predator 3200MHz
Zotac GTX 1080 amp OC
Same 600W power supply
M.2 512GB SSD

After installation, I did fresh installations of Windows 10 Pro and all games. He got his progress back when logging in, so we thought everything was okay. I also replaced one HDD with a new one and moved all his files (photos, videos, Minecraft worlds, etc.) onto it. I installed the latest drivers for the GPU and motherboard, and tested everything. Most games worked well—Fortnite had some lag but no crashes, Minecraft was fine, and Apex Legends only had minor delays.

During upgrades, I used second-hand parts from eBay. Except for gaming, they all seem to be functioning perfectly. I wiped one HDD during the process and transferred all his files onto it. I installed fresh games on both SSD and HDD, along with the newest drivers. He recovered all his progress after logging in.

I reinserted the original HDD into an old Windows installation, but kept it as a backup only. Everything seems to run smoothly now—system scans, stress tests, memory checks, and game performance are all normal.

Now for the games: Fortnite keeps crashing randomly, freezing and showing error messages. Sometimes it just closes without warning; other times it stays on screen and needs to be closed manually via Task Manager. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled many of these repeatedly, even the Epic Games Launcher.

Forza Horizon 4 fails at the intro screen, just closing with no errors. Again, I’ve reinstalled multiple times without success. Minecraft loads without issues, but once he starts playing, the screen image shifts to the bottom right, flickering between sections and making it hard to play. Apex Legends behaves similarly to Fortnite—random crashes. Warzone often gives a DirectX error. I’m trying to capture screenshots for more details.

FIFA 20 shows strange GPU removal warnings, even though it’s not actually removed. I’ll try to take a screenshot for clarity. He also streams and edits videos for his YouTube channel, which runs perfectly, but the game crashes when he starts streaming.

It’s frustrating because I’ve done extensive research and tried everything possible, but nothing seems to work. As someone completely new to PCs, I was hoping upgrading would fix everything. Honestly, it’s driving me crazy. Thank you all for your help!

Didn't reinstall Windows, proceed with that.
Edit: It looks like you did, so go ahead and swap that PSU.

I considered whether the problem might lie with the PSU itself. Since I don’t have another PSU for testing, I’m looking for existing checks that verify if it’s delivering the right power to each component.

I could adjust it in any way you prefer, since it's outdated. Do you have any suggestions for PSU options for this setup?
