Pc Freezing
Pc Freezing
Evening everyone has faced this problem for roughly half a year now. I’m nearing my limits and planning to replace most of the components. I’ve shared an earlier update here about what was going on before and the advice others gave. Right now, my PC tends to become sluggish, freezing gradually if I play a game. Sounds and effects seem to lag as if the system can’t access data from storage. After that, the app freezes but doesn’t trigger the usual freeze dialog or white screen. I can still control the mouse, but soon the rest of the machine shuts down. I usually hear YouTube-like noise before it stops working completely. Occasionally, a Microsoft unresponsive window pops up with no text before it fully crashes—sometimes not at all. Then I have to power off the PC manually. The BSOD messages are mostly WHEA errors or critical process failures, but the system doesn’t reboot itself or create a readable dump file in Event Viewer. These crashes are rare between incidents.
I also experienced an odd issue where after restarting my PC for the first time of the day or after a long idle period, one of my fans spun up extremely fast. It felt risky and I had to wait about a minute before turning it off again for it to stabilize. At that point, I suspect the CPU might be the culprit, even though I’ve spent a lot of time tweaking RAM and have even returned the 64GB sticks for replacement. Some people think the power supply unit could be the cause, so I’m seeking more guidance before Black Friday.
Before this started, I had BSODs due to faulty NVIDIA drivers. After reinstalling them cleanly, I haven’t seen any crashes. Now I’ve done:
- Updated and cleaned NVIDIA drivers
- Flashed the latest BIOS for the motherboard
- Ran Memtest86 on both 16GB and 64GB RAM
- Checked SSD health using CrystalDiskInfo (64% age)
- Verified SSD and HDD health
- Installed Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
- Tested SFC/scannow (no issues found)
- Confirmed PSU voltage via HWMonitor
- Ran a clean install of Windows
- Checked RAM with Memtest86
My specs are: OS – Windows 10 Pro 64bit, CPU – Ryzen 5 5600X, Motherboard – Gigabyte B450, etc.
I’m hoping this helps and will keep you updated!
The latest crystal disk information is stored on the ADATA SX8200PNP 1TB drive.
The percentage will only drop that quickly if there is an issue.
From your description it's almost certainly the NVMe SSD. No dump file + WHEA is almost always storage. if you want to make sure, go into Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System. Select Filter Current Log on the right hand side. In the Event Sources dropdown menu, select "WHEA-logger". If you have any WHEA events, select one and click the Details tab in the lower half of Event Viewer. Find the RawData field. This huge block of letters and numbers is the error record. If it's storage, the name of the drive will be included as hex encoded ASCII here. So copy the entire block, paste it here and click Convert. At the bottom of the converted data, it will have the name of the storage if it's storage related. The other data is supposed to be gibberish because it's the CPER from the CPU, not ASCII text. The RawData block:
You're facing another problem, and it's not showing any clear signs in the system info. The crashes are more serious than just a minor glitch.
