PC fails to start using more than a single RAM stick.
Hi everyone,
I recently installed my new GPU and noticed several issues with the RAM slots on my motherboard. It’s worth mentioning that everything functioned perfectly before I made the change.
My setup includes two 8GB RAM sticks, originally placed in the A2 and B2 channels, but now the system only boots when only one stick is in the A1 channel. I’ve tested all possible combinations, but this remains the only viable option. Whenever I attempt to boot without the RAM in the A1 slot, a yellow/orange light appears on the motherboard, signaling a DRAM issue. Both RAM sticks fit in the A1 slot, so it doesn’t seem like the problem lies with the RAM itself.
Here’s what I’ve tried:
- Cleaning both RAM sticks and slots
- Resetting the CMOS
- Updating the motherboard BIOS
None of these steps resolved the issue, and my knowledge in this area is limited.
PC Specifications:
- Rog Strix B450 gaming
- Ryzen 5 5600
- RX 6650 XT – NEW GPU
- XFX rx 480 – OLD GPU
- 2x Corsair Vengeance Pro – DDR4 3200MHz
I’m struggling to figure out the next steps and would really appreciate any advice.
In a test scenario, you might start the system in BIOS and adjust the "Memory Frequency" to 2666MHz to observe if dual sticks operate slower. The motherboard's specifications indicate that anything above 2666MHz is an overclock, helping you assess whether your RAM is contributing to the issue. Alternatively, you could attempt a 3200MHz setting while modifying the timings from CL16 to CL17 or CL18.
The ram has consistently operated between 2100 and 2200 MHz, but I don't recall the exact frequency. I've experienced issues with the board before, both related to the ram and a defective cpu fan connector, which led to my old cpu overheating.
I recently purchased a new motherboard, hoping it will resolve these problems.
Appreciate your advice!
