These are my current specifications: FX 8320 OC, 4.2 GHz, 4×4GB SK.Hynix DDR3, 2333MHZ OC M5A88-M, RX 580 gaming graphics card. I realize my setup is quite outdated, but I need to improve it for a potential upgrade. The issue began after losing the cap that shorted the CMOS pins for about four weeks before finding it. During power outages or when I change the power supply, I try to boot up—lights come on, fans spin, but there’s no beep and the screen stays off. The only way to start is by turning off the PSU, then checking the small green LED at the bottom of the motherboard; it lights up when power is received. After counting to seven, I assume it works. Once the PSU is on and the PC starts, it boots normally but shows a clear CMOS error code. I’ve tried several fixes: swapping the CMOS battery with an Energizer unit, updating the BIOS multiple times, and thoroughly cleaning the system. Despite having a different GPU and RAM for over a year, I’m confident the problem isn’t with those components. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The battery should be placed on the side with the visible writing, while the side with the circle faces into the motherboard.

Yes, that's accurate. The battery has a polarity and the device is digital, so it needs to be connected correctly. The board might have a clock capacitor that no longer functions because of age. Your issue appears to be related to the BIOS or battery, but if a fresh battery and new BIOS don<|pad|>, it might not fix it. Unless you replace the board entirely to verify, the problem could be with the hardware now. At least you found a workaround.

It looks like I should acknowledge the motherboard issue. I plan to attempt cleaning the CMOS pins, possibly removing rust before reinserting the caps. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have the MOBO brought to a technician for further assistance. Thanks for your reply—it really helps!

Consider that the board should be handled by a qualified technician rather than a basic repair shop. However, hiring one will be more expensive than replacing the board outright.
