PC fails to boot after extended inactivity
Hey, I'm trying to get my PC back to work after not using it for about two years. At first, when I turned it on it would start normally for a few seconds then shut down, before restarting and shutting off again after a few seconds. This pattern kept repeating until I forced it off, but it never actually booted up. After replacing the CMOS battery on the motherboard and installing a new PSU, nothing happens when I press the power button—no cycling or any movement at all. I've done the following:
- New CMOS battery.
- New PSU.
- Re-seated CPU and RAM.
- Used minimal components (mobo, CPU+cooler, 1 stick of RAM).
- Shorted the motherboard power pins (bypassing the case's power button).
The motherboard is a z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming. When I connect the PSU, the RAM lights up, indicating at least power is reaching the board.
System details:
- CPU: Intel i7-8700k
- CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D15S
- Motherboard: z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LED 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)
- GPU: RTX 2080 Ti
- PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 T2 and MSI MPG A1000G
- Storage: Samsung 980 PRO 1TB and Samsung 980 PRO 500GB
Any suggestions on what to try next? Thanks.
Did you continue using the existing cables or switch to the ones included with the new power supply?
Well, this looks a bit odd, but I was actually using the new cables. However, your comment made me switch back to the old ones to check the result. It didn't work at first, but after switching back to the new cables everything seems to function properly...I think there was a loose connection somewhere. Thanks!
Phew! It was always meant to stick to the cables that came with the new power supply. Using the old ones with the new unit might have caused problems for your system! You're lucky it didn't happen, just make sure to follow the instructions carefully. The good news is no damage occurred and everything is now functioning properly.
Two years isn't such a long duration, and shouldn't harm a PC that hasn't been used much, as long as it's kept in good condition. Small devices like laptops and mobiles can be neatly placed in cabinets and protected. However, keeping a large, heavy PC tower for an extended time might be challenging. Improper storage could lead to dust buildup or even attract pests.
