PC crashes during gaming - appears as a black screen.
Hello
Some time back, I purchased and put together my PC. It doesn’t have the absolute best or worst specifications, but over the years I’ve had to restrict its performance and game choices in order to prevent crashes, since finding a fix has been difficult.
Even with these adjustments, the crashes are becoming more frequent again. They used to occur once every few weeks, but now they happen multiple times a day, depending on the game.
I shouldn’t need to take these steps with a relatively new PC that still offers solid performance for the games I play.
System details:
- Corsair 4000D Airflow
- B550 AORUS Elite V2
- AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core
- EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GT 750W 80 Gold Full Modular
- G Skill DDR4 Aegis 2x8 GB
- AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
- Gembird CC SATAM DATA SATA III
- Windows 11 Home
What’s happening is that the GPU seems to be overheating because it can’t regulate properly. That’s why, in games like CS2 and Fellowship, I have to limit the FPS to 144 and 60 respectively, otherwise the GPU exceeds 90°C and crashes repeatedly. When I set a cap, the temperature stays around 60–70 °C.
In the AMD software, I’ve already turned on the fans manually and increased their speed. But even with these limits, the PC freezes completely. I receive a full black screen, and the colored fans spin for a short time, but I have to hard reset it (turn it off and on again) to get it working again. There are no blue screens or errors from the game—just a complete black screen without any lag or FPS drops before the crash.
Since this is happening again now, I’m unsure if the issue lies with my GPU or if there’s another problem, such as a faulty CPU or insufficient power supply for the EVGA 750W. I thought the advice I found online would help, but I’m exhausted from being unable to play games at full settings or high FPS without worrying about crashes on this new setup.
I hope someone with more experience can assist me in diagnosing this. This is my first post here, so please let me know if the format needs adjusting.
Feel free to share any additional information or tests from programs—just tell me what you need.
Kind regards
Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
B550 AORUS Elite V2
What BIOS version do you have installed for your motherboard?
AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core
How are you keeping the processor cool?
G Skill DDR4 Aegis 2x8 GB
Do you have a link to this RAM kit? Are there slots A2 and B2 available for populating?
The GPU seems to be overheating because it can't regulate itself.
Was the operating system installed in offline mode? Did you install all necessary drivers for your platform via an elevated command, such as right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator? While in offline mode?
You didn’t mention the storage in your build, but you included this;
Gembird CC SATAM DATA SATA III
According to a search on Google, it appears to be a SATA data cable.
These aren't the best or worst specifications, but over time I've had to restrict the PC and games to prevent crashes, as I can't find a solution.
Just to confirm, was there any recycling from an older build? Is the PSU a used unit?

Which is when?
BIOS-versie/datum indicates American Megatrends International, LLC. F14, dated 4/01/2022.
The device appears to be a Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition R2.
Could not locate the exact model name but think it matches the listed details:
https://www.megekko.nl/product/2046...s-...ugenmodule
RAM installed in slots A2 and B2.
I’m uncertain but it seems possible to verify this information.
Storage configuration includes a WD Blue SN570 1TB M.2 SSD and a Western Digital Blue WD40EZAZ 4TB drive.
All components were purchased new.
The PC is approximately three years old; it was in its first year of use. Initially, it played CS smoothly, but after some time it would crash. I limited the FPS to 144, which seems effective, keeping temperatures stable with active fans.

Gigabyte offers several PCB revisions for the board you're using. Determine which version you're working with.
I'm uncertain, is there a way to verify this?
As you mentioned before, I thought it was some time ago—three years back is quite far. No, you can't check via software since it's meant to be a memory item.
Tell me about your intake and exhaust fans. Speaking of temperatures, what are the ambient room air temperatures? What game resolution are you using? What is your monitor model and resolution?
I searched online for ways to check the PCB version but using the CMD command only returned BasicBord Version: x.x. I noticed several fans inside the case moving, including two on the front blowing in, one near the CPU blowing back, three on the GPU blowing from bottom to top, and one on the back blowing out. The top has an open metallic area with a dust cover. The room is generally normal and cold (sometimes I need to warm it up), usually around 19*C to 25*C maximum. Resolution is 2560 x 1440 at 144Hz. Screen: LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B black. Here’s the link for reference: https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/1491426/...ificaties/. Now in idle while browsing and watching a stream, the temperature from AMD Software Adrenaline is 31 GPU temp, 36 GPU hotspot temp with fans spinning at 1780 RPM (45%) and it stays fairly stable when just browsing or watching videos. Probably the main problem occurs during gaming and I feel the PC struggles to maintain higher FPS. Like it keeps trying too hard. But even at capped FPS it crashes... :/
