Hello, I've been using this computer for nearly six years. Since then, I haven't made any changes except updating the thermal paste a few years ago and replacing the UPS over a year ago. Everything has been functioning properly for gaming, work, etc. - Yesterday I was just using the PC normally, editing a post on Discord while downloading a mod in the background when it froze. I had to shut it down. - Once it started again, it would briefly power on and then shut off repeatedly until I turned off the power supply unit. - Also during this process, the EZ debug lights on the motherboard would flash between the CPU and DRAM, glowing white with a slightly longer duration for DRAM. - After resetting the BIOS using the jumper cap, it no longer shut down completely, but the EZ debug lights continued to blink in the same pattern. - Then I removed the GPU and moved the RAM sticks from A2/B2 to A1/B1, which didn't resolve the issue, just like before. - After that, I took out the second RAM stick and it worked when I booted again. Later, it also started with the first stick in another slot. - When I removed the first RAM stick and tried the second one in the same slot, it wouldn't boot at all, similar to the previous problem. - I've also run a memory diagnostic on the first stick, which came back normal. Is my second RAM stick faulty? Is it typical for a stick to simply fail or become unresponsive like this? Should I just replace a new set of RAM? Are there other things I should check? - Specs: CPU i5-9600k (auto BIOS), cooler Dark Rock Pro 4, RAM Corsair Vengeance 3200 16GB (previously had XMP enabled), MSI Z390 A PRO GPU, RTX 2060 (afterburner installed), PSU Fortron SP Hydro G 750, SSD Samsung EVO 850 500GB, case Cooler Master Mastercase H500, UPS APC Easy UPS BVX1600LI-GR (900W).
2nd dimm is dead. it is not uncommon for ram to die suddenly (at least its more obvious than intermittent stability issues). Your options are to continue with the single stick, try to find a ram stick with the closest spec/revision to replace the dead one (no guarantee that you will be able to run the rated speed and its possible the other stick may not last much longer) or replace the memory with a new kit. Given the pricing of ddr4 I would be inclined to suggest just replacing the entire memory kit as it would be the only way to ensure you have a memory kit validated for the rated speed.
Likely needs to purchase a fresh RAM package, as mentioned. It’s unclear whether to opt for 2x8GB or move up to 2x16GB. My system usually runs with many open tabs and consumes more memory now, though it’s still relatively old (6 years). I expect a replacement soon. Also, what models are available and their costs are still on my mind.
I need to replace some RAM modules. It doesn't matter if the exact model isn't listed on MSI's supported memories page. The site hasn't been updated in nearly two years. I'm considering 2x16GB because I often run many programs and need more memory these days. I also want to start video editing, which would be helpful. I plan to keep this PC for at least a couple of years. A 2x8GB might be sufficient, though the prices here are higher than elsewhere in Europe and the availability of DDR4 isn't great. So options are limited. Updated list shows most are 2x16GB with speeds between 3200-3600 MHz (not sure if all support that high). Online shops list a variety, but buying from them can be risky and warranty probably won't cover it.
