Hello, while working on my home laptop, I experimented with random CMD commands out of boredom. I ran "mountvol c:\ /d" and tried to terminate system processes using the command prompt. Then I executed "Del c:\". I expected an access denied message, but it worked instead. After confirming, I typed "y" and thought nothing would happen until I noticed files being listed as deleted. My concern grew when I realized those files were actually being removed. I panicked, thinking the PC might not boot again, so I quickly closed the window to stop further loss. I feared the system wouldn’t start at all. I need to recover these files to load Windows. Will this be the final time my PC powers on? This message appeared on the laptop I was using, and I deleted some files during the process. I’m worried about turning it off. How can I fix this issue? I own an HP ENVY Laptop. Should I back up a fresh Windows copy to a USB drive and install it here? Do I have to reinstall the operating system?

Have you attempted using Command Prompt, sfc /scannow? (from the s to the w must be written clearly). EDIT: What |sfc /scannow| does is Windows scanning and verifying for any damage on all protected system files and swapping in any corruption based on a cache.

I performed that action and the system reports "Windows Resource Protection detected corrupt files and restored them." For online fixes, information is saved in the CBS log at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. As an example, you can find it at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline repairs, the log file given by the /OFFLOGFILE option contains the details.

I see, but others might have a different opinion. Maybe. I don’t know if you’ve set up any previous restore points before removing the C drive.

I believe the computer is working now. I'll perform a restart to check if it starts up properly in Windows.
