I switched to Windows 1809 yesterday after learning it was stable post-October fix. No files were lost in my documents folder, though the entire downloads folder disappeared. I don’t recall any critical items there, but if possible, I’d like a method to recover them without reverting to an older version. It seems safe, but I’m curious if others have faced similar problems. My Windows 7 installation remains intact on the C drive.

Discovered a feature in Windows 1809 that removes the Downloads folder, though it's not a bug. If you encounter similar issues or use Disk Cleanup, keep this in mind.

This feature is designed to remove user data automatically, which could be problematic if not carefully configured.

Absolutely, I understand. Let's make it clearer.

I just completed a 1803 patch and it removed all folders from the Windows.old folder on my C drive. The problem isn’t limited to 1809—did Windows update itself, possibly triggering this issue? Could a new protocol or update protocol be causing the change?

A checkbox is present; he selected it. When disk space is limited (or execution frequency is available), Windows will remove outdated download files. Items from the Download folder that remain unchanged are likely unimportant and can be re-downloaded.

I just wondered if the new Windows update might have cleared my downloads folder by accident. It seems like a simple cleanup, nothing major, but I was curious if it could have removed other files too. I didn’t check any options and used the older version of disk cleaning—it automatically checked the downloads folder and didn’t find anything there before. I only realized it was an option after reading an article about it.
