I chose an AMD version instead of your setup since many recent titles need multiple cores or run faster with just one. The i3 still offers solid performance. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/xmxqkT

the thing is that the i3 is a quadcore with hypertrhead, but that are two beefy little cores. iirc there's nothing in the amd quadcore thange that'll beat it's performance.

Hyperthreaded quad-core processors can sometimes slow down gaming, so I opted for a different setup. However, I’d prefer your configuration because it offers more upgrade options.

Looking at the extreme scenario with hyperthreading enabled, the gap isn't significant enough to justify upgrading. Considering a GTX950, it's unlikely a current CPU would struggle on that platform.

I see the upgrade possibilities but some users lack the means and hyper-threaded dual-core might not handle games needing a quad-core. I also think it's tough to limit performance on a 950 and the stated CPU is 880k not 860k. XP link provided for comparison.

At 720p the performance should be solid, around 30+ FPS in Overwatch with the 750m setting. It's not ideal, but it works if you're willing to wait for a better PC.

Athlon doesn't sound good to me. I'm thinking an AMD Zen.

The only barrier to upgrading in the future is purchasing a dead mobo socket. The i3 offers "4 threads" for compatible games, though performance varies—at best it's only slightly worse than the athlon. In two years, someone might have extra funds to upgrade; instead of a new mobo, an i7 could be installed, which is likely affordable then.
