You adjust the render distance through the appropriate settings interface. It applies to client-side rendering as well.

Adjust your in-game settings and move the render distance setting fully upward. Most render distances are limited to client-side functionality only. The server maintains its own distance, and any events beyond that range don't occur, even with mods like Farsight caching chunks for client viewing.
