Overheating on CPU while playing God of War
I have an i7-10700k processor, RTX 3080 graphics, 32GB of RAM, a 4K display, and a Noctua NH-D9L cooling system. I don’t usually overclock. I wanted to monitor my CPU temperatures after benchmarking in several games. The room temperature was around 28°C. When I enabled GOW with DLSS set to Quality and all Ultra settings, the CPU temperatures jumped to 98-100°C. It then throttled and the game crashed. Later, running other titles like RDR2 and AC Odyssey kept temperatures near 75-80°C. About an hour later, the ambient dropped to 23.8°C and I re-enabled GOW, which stabilized between 80-82°C. I’m unsure why this happened. My cooler has never caused such spikes before. It’s possible the difference in ambient temperature is affecting performance, but a 5°C gap shouldn’t create a 20°C CPU swing. It could be a coincidence or just a fluke. Should I consider switching to an AIO cooler? Also, my location in upstate NY means temperatures stay between 23°C and 11°C for most of the year, with occasional drops below -6°C. I’m trying to understand why GOW caused such high temps and whether it’s a problem. Thanks for any advice.
The cooler comes with a 92mm fan. Consider upgrading to the noctua NH-U12 (120mm) or NH-D15 (140mm) for better airflow. A bigger heatsink also helps. You probably don’t need an AIO unless you specifically want one.
