Overheating issue with Ryzen 7 5800x and performance issues due to high temperatures
Hello everyone, I recently assembled my first PC and observed that my Ryzen 7 5800X was overheating a lot. When idle it stayed around 65-70°C, but under load it spiked to 90°C or higher, sometimes even reaching 110°C before shutting down. I used a Fractal Design Lumen S24 placed at the top in my compact meshify case. The fan turns on when it gets warm, and the pump makes a noticeable whine—likely because of airflow issues—and the power supply is connected properly with an RPM range of 4000-4100, which is its maximum setting. I've re-seated the CPU block several times, changed the thermal paste, updated my BIOS (F36c) and chip-set drivers (4.03.03.431). The CPU isn't overclocked, and removing the side panel only slightly lowered temperatures. Clearly these high temps prevent it from reaching even the advertised boost speeds, usually staying around 3GHz or less in multi-core tasks. I know this model is known for being hot, and a 240mm AIO isn’t perfect cooling, but it still feels off. Do you have any suggestions or alternatives I should consider? Or should I think about replacing something? Additional specs: RAM: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Ultra GPU: RTX 3070 Ti RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2x6 GB OS: Windows 11
The AIO includes the pump inside the radiator. I’d mount it front-mounted initially, then lower the radiator and release it below the CPU for evaluation.
For all users in dark mode: Greetings everyone, I recently assembled my first PC and observed that my Ryzen 7 5800X was overheating significantly. At idle it stayed around 65°C, but under load it reached 90°C and occasionally higher. There were instances where it hit 110°C and entered thermal shutdown. I’m using a Fractal Design Lumen S24, mounted top in my meshify 2 compact case. The cooling fan activates when the unit gets warm, and the pump produces a noticeable whine (likely no air bubbles). It’s plugged in properly with an RPM of 4000–4100 (maximum speed). I’ve re-seated the CPU block several times, changed the thermal paste, updated BIOS (F36c) and chip-set drivers (4.03.03.431). The CPU isn’t overclocked, and removing the side panel only slightly lowered temps. These temperatures prevent it from reaching even close to the advertised boost clock, usually staying around 3GHz or less on multicore tasks. I know the 5800X is known for high heat, but a 240mm AIO isn’t the best solution. Do you have any alternative suggestions or should I consider a replacement? Additional specs: RAM – Gigabyte X570 Aorus Ultra, GPU – RTX 3070 Ti, Storage – Crucial Ballistix 2x6 GB, Power Supply – Fractal Ion+, Operating System – Windows 11.
I’ve already attempted removing the radiator beneath the CPU block, but it didn’t work. Front mounting isn’t feasible since my GPU is too long for the radiator size. It looks like you’re correct. I bought a nocturnal nh-d15 and it made a huge difference. I plan to return or exchange the AIO because I don’t like the tower cooler appearance.
