I just changed my cooler from a failing Intel 120 AIO to a Corsair I100 240, using an HP FMB-0902 motherboard from a Z400 workstation. It runs a Xeon W 3540 or 3520 processor. After the switch, it reached 100°C in just 30 seconds, so I rebuilt it and tried again. I added washers to the backplate carefully but didn’t go too far—still nothing. Now I’m stuck, watching it burn while powering down. I think the VRM might be outdated and causing overheating, but that’s my best guess. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Other details: 24GB RAM at 1333MHz from Samsung/SEC chips (PC3-12800U), Evga 3080 hybrid LHR, Inatek USB3.0 card, Realtek 2.5G LAN card, TPLink Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, Apevia ATX-WR680W PSU, HP to ATX 24-pin adapter, and a stolen resistor from the old front panel header. The chipset appears to be Intel A82801JIR (likely X58 Express on HP’s site).
I noticed the connections aren’t complete yet—be careful with the mess you’ve made. I’m running Linux Mint 21, but I don’t know the BIOS details, so I’ll check if anyone needs help clarifying it.
