Can I install an overclock on an i7 6700? I understand the answer is no, but I saw online that some people managed to overclock an i3 or i5 (non-K). What options do I have for overclocking my i7 6700?

Without unlocked multiplier, the only adjustments you can make are related to BCLK frequency in BIOS. This setting affects many components beyond just the CPU, and even small changes might lead to instability, depending on your motherboard, parts, and luck. Overclocking in this manner is unlikely to improve performance significantly.

the article discusses how even a non-K CPU can be overclocked, but the gains are minimal, around 0.1 or 0.2 gHz.

Yes and no, the traditional multiplier and voltage approach doesn't work here. It depends on your motherboard, BIOS, and it might be possible. Check the guide for more details.

Yes, you can try, it's the traditional method before unlocked CPUs.
The issue is that this approach won't give much improvement since it's limited by the BCLK.
This often puts a lot of stress on the MB and other parts.
In short, if you truly want to overclock, consider using a K series CPU with a Z chipset motherboard.

I own a Lenovo desktop y700 and I'm unsure about the motherboard model... And could you clarify what BCLK refers to?

Stefan from Patina has a Lenovo desktop y700 and is unsure about the motherboard type. He also asks about BCLK but mentions he wouldn't try overclocking with this machine.

Why? Not a potato PC... Just don't...
If you need something better, consider building it yourself or having it made.
