I own a Z390 Aorus Pro, Noctua NH-U9S, Corsair rm750x, and an i5 9600k. I’ve watched several tutorials and guides on overclocking but haven’t succeeded even once. The BIOS version is f11, and I plan to update it tomorrow if necessary. Many of the videos are from 2019, with some details changing in the BIOS and different naming conventions. After spending five hours reading and trying, nothing works. I’m aware of the silicone lottery and that each chip behaves differently. I’m hoping to reach around 4.8 GHz at this point.
Initially, your CPU must handle that high frequency. A K doesn’t mean the same when it comes to overclocking distance... begin with small increments... 100 MHz each time and check your system’s stability. Keep repeating until you hit the point where booting or running OS stops working, then go back to earlier settings and enjoy the ride.
My 9600k handles 4.8GHz across all cores smoothly without any issues at 1.3v and with an AVX offset of 3, as long as temperatures stay below 80°C. This setup seems reliable. Your processor might vary slightly, but most should support 4.8GHz all core at 1.3v. The lower you go to 1.27v it works, though I haven't tested enough there yet. To reach 5GHz all core you need 1.35v and an AVX offset of 5, but stability isn't perfect—control crashed during fast travel after a session, even though temps were under 60°C. It looks like your chip might need a bit more voltage. I’d rather stay below 1.35v, so I might stick with 4.9GHz all core. I could experiment at 1.355v to check if it pushes the limit and improves stability.
In addition to CPU ratio, you should adjust AVX offset and voltage. Start with small changes and test each step. All cores performing well indicates your configuration is on the right track.
The difference in voltage requirements comes down to performance goals and chip design. Lower voltages with higher clocks yield better performance and more precise binning, while higher voltages with slower clocks can result in less optimized results. Transistor size does play a role, but it's not the only factor—clock speed and desired frequency also matter significantly.
I saw der8auer's video on the subject, plus another YouTuber from my country who also has a read and oc guide. Nothing seems to work despite running at 4.6GHz with all cores. It doesn’t seem like a huge jump to go to 4.8GHz.
Did you adjust the turbo power settings in the BIOS? Many Intel processors can slow down if the limits are at their standard values. Once your system starts up, use HWiNFO to check why it isn’t performing at the speed you intended in the BIOS. This list may point to the cause of throttling.
As you ascend higher the required voltage rises non-linearly. For your 10900kf, 5GHz all-core setup demands 1.15V, 5.1GHz needs 1.28V, and 5.2GHz requires 1.4V (across all loads). At 1.4V cooling becomes unfeasible; even at 1.3V it's already challenging.
Check the BIOS section for power limits or component names. The version tried was 4.8, which works with AIDA64 FPU and CPU stress but requires higher voltage—around 1.335 after some time.
