Hello! I'm trying to boost my CPU speed to around 5GHz, but it's not staying stable at that level. I'm just starting out with overclocking. My machine is an Intel i5 9600K from MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz, 16GB RAM (32GB) with XMP enabled on a Corsair tx750M 3090FE Corsair Hydro H100i Pro. I previously got it running at 4.9GHz with 3.315V and it worked well, but now I'm struggling to maintain anything above 30 minutes at 5GHz. The temperature is around 75°C. The difference between 4.9 and 5GHz seems significant.

If your CPU runs at 3.315v, it's likely deep fried. I'm guessing you're thinking about 1.315v, meaning you could push higher voltages for better performance if you just need 5.0Ghz. But if your older CPU isn't worth keeping, the gains are minimal and don't match the i5 12400's specs—only has hyper threads—and the cost is reasonable.

But if your older CPU isn't worth keeping, the gains are minimal and don't match the i5 12400's specs—only has hyper threads—and the cost is reasonable.

Not all coffee lake chips work at 5GHz. Many do, but if the silicon doesn't quite fit, you might see speeds drop to around 4.9GHz or less in some cases. My 8700K needed liquid metal and significant voltage before it could reliably hit 5GHz, even with a custom water loop. It seems my chip either suffered heavy damage or was a poor match for the process—hard to say without knowing its history. From a performance standpoint, this makes sense given the higher power needs of 5GHz. If you mean actual results, it's likely just a minor placebo effect; the difference would be about 2%, which is barely perceptible outside of lab tests.

The 60-70fps average isn't just a placebo effect. Your experience shows clear changes in frame rates during intense gameplay, especially noticeable at higher refresh rates. That difference you're seeing is real and not just perception.

I'm not sure if you're using 1080p, 1440p or 4K, but that 9600K is really limiting your 3090. Keep an eye on your GPU usage. No amount of tweaking the overclock will fix this. You'll need a CPU upgrade instead.

I doubt the way you tested the results. The impact will be just 2%, which is typical for CPU overclocking.

I understand, but the improvement from that 2% isn't really visible. CoD Cold War isn't the only game where I see a difference either. Warzone 1 and 2 perform much better at 4.9 and 5ghz.
