Can you increase the clock speed of the i5 6600k using the H110-S2P VGA motherboard, or is it necessary to purchase a Z170 to enable unlocked 'K' CPUs?

You're right, unfortunately. Only Z170 chipsets are suitable for overclocking 'K' CPUs. To achieve this, you'd need a Z170 motherboard and a good cooling solution, since these CPUs typically require additional cooling beyond the standard included units.
