I’ve heard mixed things about overclocking the new i5. I started by setting one core to 5 GHz and another to 4.0 GHz, and it worked fine for a week. Then I adjusted the ring ratio by 200 MHz, which caused the chip to fail. I’m confused about what ring ratio means, but I’m trying to push it higher now. I’m using an MSI Z690 Pro D4 with Wi-Fi, and I’m used to ASUS BIOS. Online reviews mention the limits of the new chip, but I’m curious if there’s more useful info out there. For me, I’m not into gaming much—just trading and media playback. I’m using a Samsung 980 Pro for booting and a GTX 980 for media. I’m wondering if a FirePro would be better for running multiple monitors. What’s the realistic max I should aim for?

Ring represents the cache ratio. It needs extra voltage to boost overclocking. If no separate voltage exists, raise the CPU v-core gradually. Do so carefully and test. Re-rinse thoroughly each time.
