i'm attempting to push my cpu to its peak performance.
i have an i7 930 which is quite outdated and i haven't been able to upgrade it for at least nine months.
i also have a flamingblade gti with 16gb of ram.
my previous approach was to reduce all multipliers and then try to boost the base clock.
i managed to get my base clock up to 180mhz (133mhz was the original) without raising the voltage.
when i reached 185mhz, the system wouldn't boot, so i increased the vcore but it didn't help.
my pc runs smoothly in prime95 at 182mhz without any voltage changes (max temperature around 68°C after an hour).
but at 183mhz i experience stability problems, even with a 0.25v boost.
now my cpu is running at 3.8ghz instead of the base 2.8ghz, but i'd like to extract a bit more performance.
i'm not sure what might be limiting the increase in my base clock.
by the way, this is my first serious overclock attempt, so it could be a beginner error i'm making.

Occasionally the silicon reaches its limit, even with enough thermal capacity.
3.8Ghz works for an i7-930.
A useful reference guide is available here: http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-...-to-4-0ghz
