I recently purchased a system with an i7 2600 on an MSI Z77A-G45 gaming motherboard. I’ve heard it’s possible to mildly overclock non-K CPUs, but I’m limited by the locked multiplier. This is my first time doing it, so I’m looking for advice and tips. The system includes a Hyper TX3 cooler, but this morning I swapped my old CPU for a Corsair A70 air cooler with upgraded 2 PWM fans from an H100. If you need more details, just let me know.

For models outside the K series i7 line, overclocking isn't possible. The best option is tweaking the FSB, though this won't provide much benefit since the gains are minimal and may cause instability.

On certain non-K CPUs, you can increase the multiplier by four levels above the boost value when using a Z-series board. The BCLK tends to stay consistent until around 105MHz. This allowed me to achieve a running speed of about 4.4GHz for my 3570 with a 3.8GHz boost clock on an ASRock Z77 Extreme 4, thanks to good cooling.

On certain non-K CPUs, you can increase the multiplier by four levels above the boost value when using a Z-series board. The BCLK tends to stay consistent until around 105MHz. This allowed me to achieve a running speed of about 4.4GHz for my 3570 with a 3.8GHz boost clock on an ASRock Z77 Extreme 4, thanks to good cooling.

It's possible to reach 4.2GHz even though the tubro clocks at 3.8GHz, which is just above a 4x boost. The Corsair A70 cooler appears adequate. For overclocking, enter BIOS, switch CPU core or multiplier to manual, adjust all cores' multiplier to around 40 instead of the default 38. In the BIOS, look for CPU voltage and choose offset instead of auto, leaving it at +0,000v. After that, boot into Windows and run tools like aida64 or prime95 for an hour or two. If it crashes, raise voltage by 0,010v in BIOS and try increasing multiplier to 41 if needed. Monitor temperatures during testing.

According to what I understand, around 1155 you could reach a speed of about 4 steps above turbo. That’s roughly 4.1 times the base speed.

I encountered some issues setting up the cooler since my case lacks a CPU cutout, but managed to install it. I experimented by beginning at 3.9GHz. Initially, it triggered BSODs on stock settings, so I increased the voltage slightly and eventually settled on 1.2V from the original 1.156V. After running Prime95 for about 35 minutes without problems, the biggest concern was a 59°C spike on the hottest core—this happened when one fan ran at a different speed. The fan connected to the CPU header was spinning at 900RPM, while the other was at 3000RPM via the system header. I plan to fix it soon. Is this acceptable? If yes, how much more should I adjust it?

The distance you should apply depends on your goals and the chip's limits. I managed to run my 3770k at 4.3GHz before it needed extra voltage, and at stock turbo (3.9GHz) I could actually lower the voltage by -0.15v. If you're similar, test how far you can push it without hitting 85°C in the Prime95 FFT test and keep the voltage under 1.4 or 1.35 based on your concerns—some think 1.4 is too high, but I personally run it at 1.5v for overclocking.

Ok, newby question...I have an old dell with i7 2600 sandy bridge - I have gone thru options in the bios and there appears to be no way to overclock does anyone have any idea how it could be done. computer model is xps8300. Or alternatively a faster processor that will fit the existing socket?
