So I just attached a cooler master 120 to my 4690k in the hope of boosting its performance. But before I began, I decided to run a prime95 test to check the temperatures beforehand. I’m concerned because I’ve heard I should be safe overclocking with this cooler.

I ran the test using manual fan speeds, starting at 20% until reaching 40 degrees, then increasing to 100% when I hit 66 degrees. During the test, the CPU reached 90-95 degrees, but the fans didn’t kick up immediately. Once they did, the temperatures dropped to around 88 degrees, though the others stayed in the 90-95 range. I don’t let it run long because those high temps are unsettling.

This outcome isn’t encouraging for overclocking, even a little bit on this chipset. Everyone I’ve talked to or read online says this cooler should handle overclocking fine.

Please help me out—I’m really disappointed right now after replacing the stock cooler with this one and hoping for some improvement.
Thanks.

also while i'm not doing much like browsing, my temperatures seem to jump from 38 to 50 quite unpredictably isn't this normal? shouldn't they be more consistent?

The reseated cooler block was cleaned to remove extra paste. It's unclear which part caused the issue, but after applying Prime95 stress, temperatures are now between 58-60 degrees, which is good.
