Initially, the i5 6500 is more affordable than the unlocked i5-6600k.
Additionally, an i5-6500 boosted to 4.5 GHz can outperform a fully unlocked i5-6600k when used with quicker DDR4 RAM.

1. The cost wasn't the main issue
2. This was just one test; the article is from January and hasn't shown consistent results. That feature has since been disabled.
Thanks for the details.
I also have a follow-up question.
If I own an i5 6600k and I overclock it, does my multitasking performance improve?
Absolutely, your PC's overall speed will rise, but the key factor for smooth multitasking remains sufficient RAM and fast processing power.

I wonder if upgrading my CPU to an i5 6500 OC at 4.4GHZ would improve my multitasking speed. But I heard you can't overclock it.

I'm wondering if upgrading my CPU to an i5 6500 OC @4.4GHZ will actually improve multitasking performance.
It seems I can't overclock this model.
Can I really overclock an i5-6500 with a Z170 motherboard?
No, that's not possible.
Some motherboards used to support this, but it's now restricted.
You'd need a K-series processor like the i5-6600k for such an upgrade.

Rogue is right; the latest board versions include a BIOS that prevents overclocking, excluding non-K chips.

ASRock has issued new motherboard BIOS updates that eliminate the SKY OS feature, which allowed users to overclock non-K Intel processors using BCLK. This change was announced in February 2016.

Absolutely, your PC's overall performance will get better. But the key part of multitasking depends on having fast and sufficient RAM. For instance, upgrading from 8GB to 16GB can greatly enhance heavy multitasking.
